Hi! I've been having a great time playing Widelands version 1.1. that I downloaded from the snap store. Now that the new version is out I can't wait for it to become available in the snap store so that I can download and play it. Downloading and installing it from this website seems overwhelmingly complicated to me.

Hi,
we provide Widelands officially in a lot of different formats but the snap package is one that is not officially maintained by us but a third-party project.

For all common Linuxes we offer a Flatpak package, which, if you have Flatpak installed, can be installed via a single click here or this command. (Flatpak is basically much the same as snap.)

For Ubuntu we additionally maintain a PPA, so you install Widelands via the regular apt package manager.

And we provide an AppImage as well, which is a single-file download that can be run directly, although if you don't use AppImages much yet there are sometimes complications.

I've got flatpak and snap installed now. IMHO flatpak is better.
